The officer in charge of any prison or camp must take in charge any property, money, or other thing of value in the possession of any convict at the time of the delivery of such convict to him . . . (Ala. Code 14-3-36, [Supp. 1982]). The money collected is placed in the institution's prisoner's money on deposit account and the prisoner may draw on that account for visits to the canteen. When a prisoner wishes to take money from the account he completes a two or three-part withdrawal receipt listing name, date, and amount. The prisoner receives a copy and the other copy(ies) remain in the book and are used to balance out the bank statement and the canteen transaction.
